A wholesome getaway to The Wagon with Faraway Views

On a balmy Friday afternoon, we wound our way through Devon’s rolling countryside to find our hidden haven, The Wagon with Faraway Views. A warm glow cast itself across the horizon, highlighting the beauty of the outstretched views of Dartmoor National Park that lay before us. We made ourselves at home by unloading the bags and pouring a glass of bubbles to begin our weekend together in Devon.

Once we had settled in and Ronnie my Cocker Spaniel had explored the beautiful enclosed garden, we decided it was time to eat! Like all leisurely weekends, we wanted our time to flow with ease, so planned what to eat ahead of our trip. Feeling like a Friday treat, my sister picked up a delicious grazing box from Pretty Tasty in Cornwall before heading on the road, so all we had to do was unbox and tuck in.

After fully indulging, it was time to relax and enjoy an evening of catching up from the warmth of the heavenly hot tub. A weekend at this wholesome hideaway was just what we needed. With all three of us now living across the southwest, getting to spend quality time together feels even more special. A fair few hours flew by as we told stories and stargazed, so we retreated into our cosy wagon to rest our weary heads.

An evening in the hot tub

We woke early the next morning and enjoyed tea and croissants on the decking while watching the weather unfurl across Dartmoor. We prepared ourselves for a rainy day but nothing could dampen our spirits during our escape, so we got dressed and headed out to Bow Garden Centre for a bimble around the plants and coffee and cake.

After a leisurely few hours, we retreated back to our hideaway for an afternoon of games while Ronnie lazily snoozed at our feet. We hopped in and out of the hot tub, and as the rain turned to light drizzle we set up our card game on the covered decking which was so atmospheric.

While sunshine enhances a glamping getaway, the rain can be equally magical as it encouraged us to slow down for the day. We couldn’t remember the last time we’d had an afternoon to simply relax together and to be cosied up in a fairytale wagon made the experience so much sweeter.

Our evening was much the same as the night before, soaking in the bubbling hot tub while chatting and wildlife-watching. We were lucky enough to spot two hedgehogs during our stay!

The following morning we were delighted to see that the clouds had parted and sunshine greeted us. To make the most of the weather, we enjoyed a breakfast of fluffy pancakes at our little haven, before heading to Dartmoor to do a walk and wild swim.

You can reach the north of Dartmoor National Park in just 30 minutes. Since reading about Cullever Steps, a hidden wild swimming spot in Devon, I had daydreamed about a summer dip here, so we found the parking spot and made tracks with Ronnie in tow.

Before cooling off in the freshwater, we decided to venture a little further afield. Spotting ponies and plenty of sheep, we loved soaking up the magic of nature during our walk. There is something so enchanting about Devon in general, and Dartmoor takes this to the next level. The air feels so crisp and clean, the views of rolling hills and tumbling valleys are spectacular, and the atmosphere is so laid back, you can’t help but feel totally relaxed while spending time here.

We then set off down the path to find Cullever Steps. The air was warm and with the sun popping out behind the clouds, the crystal-clear water looked so inviting. We slipped on our swimsuits and carefully plunged into this magical natural pool. Preparing ourselves for chilly temperatures, we were so surprised to find the water to be quite reasonable and with the pool being large and deep enough to actually swim, we managed to stay in for quite some time. The pool isn’t difficult to find if you’ve checked the route, so we recommend taking a look at this blog before you set off.

Feeling fully content after our Dartmoor adventure, we stopped at The Tors Inn in Belstone for lunch. On Sunday ‘The Shed’ is open serving delicious homemade burgers and loaded fries. We tucked into our final feast while sharing our favourite moments from the weekend. After a long goodbye, we headed home with our cups full of everlasting memories of the most wholesome weekend together in Devon.
