Rest and relaxation at Shepherd's View

Sometimes you don't realise how much you’re seeking a change of scenery until you arrive somewhere that allows you to fully switch off and unwind. That was exactly how we felt when we arrived at Shepherd's View in Staffordshire.
The journey was scenic, with the landscapes gradually changing from Cornwall's rugged coastline to the rolling green countryside of Staffordshire. As soon as we stepped through the door, everyday life seemed to melt away. Warm afternoon sunlight poured through the windows, filling the shepherd's hut with a soft golden glow, while the calming neutral interiors and carefully chosen finishing touches created an instant sense of comfort. Every detail had clearly been thoughtfully considered, making it feel like a cosy countryside retreat.
One of the things we'd been most excited about was experiencing the new wellness area, and it certainly didn't disappoint. As the evening light began to soften, we wandered over to make the most of the peaceful surroundings. We started with the icy cold plunge, which was every bit as refreshing as expected, before stepping into the warmth of the traditional sauna. Sitting there, looking out across gently rolling fields where sheep grazed quietly against the backdrop of idyllic Staffordshire countryside, it was impossible not to slow down and simply enjoy the moment. Afterwards, we lit the fire pit, wrapped ourselves in blankets and toasted marshmallows while sipping rich hot chocolate under the fading summer sky. It was the perfect end to our first evening.
We both enjoyed a completely restorative night’s sleep. The bed was utterly comfy, and with nothing to disturb us but birdsong drifting in through the open window, it was easy to forget about alarms and busy schedules. We spent a slow morning with fresh coffee in hand, chatting about our plans before setting off to explore.
With another beautiful day of sunshine ahead, we drove to the nearby Trentham Gardens, one of Staffordshire's best places to visit. We spent hours wandering around the peaceful mile-long lake, watching elegant swans glide effortlessly across the water while ducks paddled between the reeds. The Italian Gardens were bursting with colour, their neatly manicured flower beds surrounding grand fountains and ornamental terraces. Every turn revealed another picturesque corner, making it impossible not to stop and enjoy every moment. After treating ourselves to tea and cake overlooking the lake, we made our way back to Shepherd's View for a relaxing afternoon.
Back at the hut, the wood-fired hot tub quickly became our favourite spot. Tucked away in its own private corner, it felt wonderfully secluded despite the open countryside stretching out around us. As we soaked in the warm water, sheep grazed peacefully in the neighbouring fields, occasionally looking up with gentle curiosity, while the resident horses came galloping over to say hello before wandering away again. The afternoon sun lingered overhead, turning the area into a complete sun trap, while colourful flowers surrounding the hut swayed gently in the breeze.
That evening, we followed our host's recommendation and visited the charming market town of Eccleshall. Its elegant Georgian high street was full of character, lined with independent boutiques, welcoming cafés and traditional pubs that gave the town a wonderfully friendly atmosphere. After exploring the streets for a while, we settled into Olive Italian for dinner, where we enjoyed freshly made pizzas and a well-earned glass of wine. Knowing the restaurant is family-run and champions local produce made the meal feel even more special.
Before we knew it, our final morning had arrived. As the early sunshine stretched across the surrounding fields, we wandered outside to say goodbye to our woolly neighbours before preparing breakfast. We'd ordered one of the owner’s much-loved breakfast hampers before arriving, and it was packed with delicious local produce, including fresh eggs, artisan bread, locally sourced meats, preserves, juices and milk. Cooking everything in the well-equipped kitchen was a lovely way to enjoy our final few hours here. We also couldn't resist picking a few veggies from the guest vegetable patch, another thoughtful touch that made our stay so unique.
Looking back, it wasn't just the shepherd's hut that made the experience so memorable. It was the feeling of slowing down completely, the peaceful rhythm of countryside life, and all the little moments that often become the ones you remember most. Whether we were watching the horses wander across the fields, soaking in the hot tub beneath clear blue skies, or ending the day beside the crackling fire pit, every part of our stay encouraged us to pause and simply enjoy where we were.
