If you’re seeking a wholesome getaway to calm your busy mind and indulge in nature for a little while, Duck’s Puddle is just the tonic. Perfect for a solo adventure or romantic break alike, this home-from-home retreat is utterly soul-soothing. Delve into the magic of Matt’s solo staycation to rural Somerset, as he explores the Quantock Hills and sets some time aside to practise mindfulness in nature.
Driving through winding country lanes, soaking up the unspoilt scenery, your getaway begins before you even arrive at Duck’s Puddle. Beautifully secluded in a slice of rural paradise, I caught glimpses of patchwork farmland and livestock quietly grazing in fields before arriving at the hut. Nestled on a quiet working farm in the Quantock Hills, I said hello to the free running chickens and ducks as I made my way along the path. Greeted by its warm countryside charm, I instantly felt at ease when stepping inside the hut, a real home-from-home feel. It was time to switch off, recharge and embrace this solo adventure.
Duck’s Puddle offers a dose of escapism, it's the perfect getaway for some much needed downtime. The surrounding trees and tranquil fields seemed to shelter the hut away from the outside world, allowing you to feel a million miles away from the busyness of everyday life. The hot tub was waiting for me behind the hut - the perfect excuse to unwind as the sun dipped beyond the horizon. After a blissful soak I felt well and truly relaxed so headed inside to rest my head and drifted off into a peaceful sleep.
I woke feeling well rested and ready for the day ahead, the double bed was super comfy and cosy. I popped the kettle on, opened up the double doors and took a moment to enjoy the stillness of my surroundings. Making myself a cup of tea, accompanied by a delicious croissant and fresh fruit, I read a couple of chapters of my favourite book whilst sipping my morning brew… An idyllic way to begin the day!
It was time to venture out and do some exploring. Klive beach was first on the agenda, it took just 20-minutes to drive to the coast from Duck’s Puddle. Marked as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, I could definitely see why; rugged rock formations, stunning limestone cliffs and even fossils! Somerset’s very own Jurassic Coast. I took a stroll along the pebbled shore then decided the countryside was calling.
I stopped off at Lydeard Farm Shop on the way back to grab some fresh local produce which inspired me to rustle up some delights later that evening. When I returned to the hut I simply strolled the quaint country lanes until I worked up an appetite. I enjoyed my dinner alfresco, listening to the gentle flow of the river, whilst dining on the sweet little bridge, before settling down for another cosy night in the hut.
The following morning, I decided to rise early and wake with the sun before exploring a slice of the Quantock Hills. You can walk up into the hills from the Duck’s Puddle. It was so peaceful at this time of the morning, which really helped to clear my mind from any distractions. The lovely owner then suggested I visit Great Wood, known for its Red and Roe Deer. I strolled through the trees and although I didn’t spot any deer this time, it was definitely still worth the visit! From there, it was time to head home feeling totally relaxed after my solo reset in nature.
If I have inspired you to take a trip to Somerset, solo or not, Duck’s Puddle is the perfect hideaway for some much needed downtime. Lamb’s Tale Shepherd’s Hut is also on the same site, just as beautiful! Alternatively, you’ll also find Dulcie nestled on the farm - a quirky wagon offering a truly unique glamping experience.
