A weekend well spent at The Dell
Penned on the 9th March 2026
Tucked away in the heart of Devon, we meandered along winding country lanes, with rolling hills stretching out around us, and sheep grazing peacefully in the fields. As we pulled up to our weekend hideaway, The Dell, we instantly felt a sense of calm wash over us.

Unlocking the door to our cosy shepherd’s hut, we were immediately greeted with a space that felt like home. Thoughtfully designed, it featured a comfortable double bed (with bunks perfect for little ones), a snug lounge area, a spacious kitchen-diner, and a modern bathroom, ideal for couples or families alike. We popped the kettle on, sank into the sofa, and opened the double doors so our dog could happily potter around the enclosed garden, which was perfect for her to enjoy safely throughout our stay.
With tea warming our hands, we wrapped up and wandered across the owners’ land and up the bridle path, perfectly positioned for exploring. The weather began to shift, calling for coats and wellies, but a little rain only added to the atmosphere. There’s something magical about embracing the countryside as the elements roll in, the fresh air, the open views, the sense of space.

That evening, we ventured into the village of Slapton after booking a table at the local pub recommended by the owners, Sally and Paul. The approach itself was an adventure, narrow lanes where only certain vehicles can pass at a time, adding to the charm of this tucked-away corner of Devon. Torch in hand, we made our way to The Tower Inn, glowing with festoon lights outside and bustling with friendly locals inside. Candlelit tables, a roaring fire in the corner, and delicious food made it the perfect cosy retreat, and it’s wonderfully dog-friendly too. We returned to our hut later that night, content and warm, as rain gently pattered against the windows.

The next morning greeted us with beautiful February sunshine, so we seized the opportunity to explore further. After a slow breakfast at the dining table, we laced up our boots and set off with our pooch in tow. Our walk took us from Shipley Bridge to Avon Dam, following the scenic path along the River Avon. With water rushing beside us, we admired the sweeping Dartmoor landscape, gentle waterfalls, and the still, peaceful reservoir. The mostly tarmacked trail makes this route ideal for families and, in our case, meant a rare mud-free winter walk for our pup! Back at the start, we couldn’t resist a toastie and hot drink from the beloved Clippers Tea Truck, the perfect post-walk treat.

Returning to The Dell, we were more than ready to sink into the wood-fired hot tub. We spent hours soaking in the warm water, chatting as birdsong filled the crisp winter air. That evening, with the weather still on our side, we lit the firepit for an al fresco dinner. Using produce from the local farm shop, we made steak tacos with fresh chimichurri, paired with our favourite tipple. As darkness fell, we toasted marshmallows beneath a blanket of stars, making the most of the private outdoor space. When the chill eventually crept in, we retreated indoors, lighting the wood burner and curling up on the sofa under soft blankets.

Our final morning arrived far too quickly. Even waking to the sound of rain only added to the cosiness we’d come to love. Over coffee, we reminisced about such a special few days, how peaceful it had been, how much we’d explored, and how lovely it was to share it all with our dog, Winnie.
The Dell truly is a special hideaway, a perfect base for countryside adventures and slow, restorative moments alike. Sally and Paul have thought of everything, creating a space that feels both welcoming and wonderfully secluded. We left already dreaming of our return.
