Woodland wanderings at Foxy Loxy

Arriving through the trees, we took the winding path towards Foxy Loxy at Roe Wood, taking in the beautiful views over the countryside and out to sea in the distance.

Friday afternoon found us weaving through the country lanes of South Cornwall, excitedly making our way to Foxy Loxy for the weekend. Incredibly peaceful, all we could hear were birds and the sound of the wind through the trees as we stepped onto the wooden decking and inside our hideaway.

Toasty warm and oh-so-welcoming, we found the open-plan space just perfect for two, with a gorgeous king-sized bed enveloped in luxurious linens, a cosy sofa for two to cuddle up on, a wood burner and a bijou kitchen fully equipped with everything we needed to rustle up meals. Next to the kitchen, a shower room complete with heated rail for towels was on hand to wake us up in the mornings.

Breakfast at Foxy Loxy

On our way in, we spied the huge hot tub, and not wanting to waste a moment, we hopped in with a bottle of bubbles to enjoy as twilight began to descend, accompanied by nothing except the call of owls. Fully relaxed, we headed back inside, lit the fire, played music and rustled up a simple supper, before hunkering down for the night and collapsing into bed for a blissful night’s sleep.

The next day dawned foggy, the surrounding trees mysterious and beautiful. We decided to make the most of our day and set off to Fowey. With streets lined with unique and boutique shops, olde-wolde houses and lovely river views, we wandered slowly, gazing into shop windows, stopping for a late breakfast and finding a quiet bench near Fowey Landing, where we watched boats trundle across the river and families beachcombing for sea glass.

Afterwards, we headed to Charlestown to take a look at the historic harbour, which doubled as Truro in the BBC’s most recent Poldark series. It’s also starred in other productions such as Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto. We strolled around before heading to the Pier House Hotel for an excellent lunch in beautiful surroundings, before making our way back to the car.

On the way back, we stopped off at Colwith Farm, just a few minutes away from Foxy Loxy. Here, you’ll find a fabulous farm shop selling tasty local produce, including potatoes grown on the farm. We picked up some goodies to take back to the cabin before visiting their distillery, where they distil vodka and gin. With tastings, guided tours and even a school, it’s a must-visit for any spirit connoisseur or anyone who just loves a tipple. I tried the Seaberry Vodka which was so delicious I bought a bottle. Afterwards, we popped into the café for a coffee and a slice of delicious gin and lemon drizzle cake to share, before retreating back to Foxy Loxy for the evening.

That night, we yet again luxuriated in the spacious hot tub, watching the distant lighthouse make itself known to passing ships. We rustled up a warming feast of chicken and ham pie and fresh vegetables, all from the farm shop, and ate at the breakfast bar, before retiring for the night with just the flicker of firelight illuminating the cosy space as we fell asleep.

Dusk at Foxy Loxy

The next day dawned dry and clear, and after a relaxed breakfast, we made our way deep into the countryside to Carnglaze Caverns, a spectacular set of three caves 60 meters underground with deep pools, formed through mining and excavations 300 years ago. We were lucky enough to have the caves to ourselves as we gazed in wonder at this subterranean world, incredibly pretty but also poignant, knowing that a huge number of men and children worked down here to extract blue slate that topped the houses of Cornwall, as well as iron and copper ore. Stepping back out into the sun, we meandered through the small garden and woodland walk, making sure to tie our rattan threads given to us on arrival onto the wishing tree (also known as a clootie tree).

Afterwards, we headed to the picturesque seaside town of Polperro, an easy drive away. With its long, narrow harbour and rows of whitewashed fishermen’s cottages, it’s incredibly pretty, and no visit would be complete without a stop at The Three Pilchards, Polperro’s oldest inn. We were lucky enough to bag the last table for Sunday lunch, a meal of such epic proportions that you’ll definitely need to bring a good appetite with you! Absolutely delicious, we had the choice of belly pork, turkey, beef, and nut roast. Paired with a pint, we rolled out the door and up the hill, before returning to Foxy Loxy for our final night.

After a little post-lunch nap, we relaxed into the hot tub before sitting outside by the fire pit, watching the pinpricks of stars begin to appear overhead. Wrapped in blankets, we enjoyed a glass of something special before heading to bed.

The next morning, we packed up and said our goodbyes to our hideaway as we made our way along the woodland track and on to our journey home, thankful for an unforgettable weekend amongst the trees.
