A cosy pub lunch at The Fox's Revenge, Cornwall
Penned on the 27th November 2023
Last week, we were kindly invited to The Fox’s Revenge in Cornwall, a 400 year old pub tucked in the tranquil countryside, just a stone’s throw from the bustling seaside town of Newquay. Chef Ben Ambridge's food focuses on great Cornish produce, created to get the best flavours out of every ingredient. We couldn’t wait to try the menu! We sampled their mouth-watering lunch menu, which offered pub classic’s with a twist. We were simply blown away by the punchy flavours in each dish. Here’s a little more about our afternoon…
On a chilly November afternoon, we made our way to The Fox’s Revenge, excited to unwind in a cosy pub setting and enjoy some “chef inspired comfort food”. The pub itself is tucked down a countryside road, just off of the A30, so it’s easily accessible. After a blustery coastal ramble, this would be just the spot to fill your belly and get toasty beside the flickering fire. Built in 1669, the pub has a traditional look and feel, we stepped in from the cold and were warmly welcomed by the cosy ambience and friendly staff.
The inside space is traditional with a modern twist; exposed wooden beams pay respect to the pub's history and illuminated signs add a cool vibe. With moody lighting and a roaring fire, we felt truly welcomed here.
They offer an extensive drinks menu including seasonal cocktails and mocktails, local gins and beers and great wines. We opted for a cranberry and mint based mocktail, it was delicious and so refreshing! Intrigued by the crispy blue cheese olives, we ordered some to nibble on as we enjoyed our drink. These did not disappoint… coated in a thin crispy batter, the olives were stuffed with rich blue cheese which melted in our mouths. To start, we also shared the salt and pepper squid and could already tell this lunch was going to be divine.
Our main meal came beautifully presented and packed a punchy flavour. The rump steak baguette with cheddar, gravy and crispy onions was the perfect comfort meal and the potato gnocchi with aubergine caponata offered a variety of flavour and texture. We just couldn’t resist dessert, the warm treacle tart with clotted cream was just perfect to round off our delicious lunch - we left with our bellies full, feeling super content after our wholesome afternoon.
The Fox’s Revenge is the perfect dining setting for an autumn / winter pub lunch. They also offer a 3-course festive menu from late November and throughout December where you can sample some festive favourites with a glass of wine or two beside the roaring fire. During the summer months, you’ll be able to sit outside in their bustling beer garden and sample some barbecued delights in their rustic smokeshack… whatever the occasion, The Fox’s Revenge has you covered! For a taste of Italy, be sure to visit Ben’s other location in Wadebridge, ‘Onda’ - where you are promised fine dining and Italian inspired cuisine.
