Find your calm: retreat to nature and discover peace is the new luxury

In the modern world, each day is full of moments of connection, often through digital devices. From personal messages to work emails, phone calls, social media notifications, reminders of things we must not forget to do and buy, there’s often lots of distraction that’s hard to switch off. Time can move quickly, and with so much competing for our attention, what if we paused for a moment and asked ourselves what it is we really want from life? What do our mind, body and soul truly desire… more noise and external influence, or simply a little space to feel content with the life we lead?

Peace is now considered the new luxury, and a glamping break promises you time to reset your nervous system, reconnect with nature, and focus on what’s truly important, protecting your calm.

Finding the right location

When the search for somewhere to stay begins, you could consider a hideaway close to home. Opting for staycations in an area you are familiar with relieves the pressure to get out and explore somewhere completely new, giving you more time to unwind at your hidden haven. However, if a road trip is part of the experience for you, then embrace the journey and search further afield to discover your perfect glamping retreat. Some people find they can relax quicker when they are further away from their day-to-day surroundings. When the search begins, we’ve got you covered with hideaways as far up in the UK as the Scottish Highlands and as far down as Land's End in Cornwall.

Let go of the noise and start to unwind

Once you arrive at your hideout, it can take a bit of time to settle into a slower pace of life, so be gentle with yourself and take small steps to find your inner peace. Why not begin by turning off the noise and tuning into your surroundings? Put your phone away, mute the apps, switch off the Wi-Fi, and soak up the atmosphere. Engage your senses and admire how your nervous system begins to relax. You could light the wood burner, pop the kettle on, pull on your comfies, then take a seat and embrace quiet, hygge moments.

For those with busy minds, the thought of silence can feel quite daunting, so don’t be afraid to put on your favourite podcast or playlist, and of course, a getaway can be even more special with a companion; you don’t need to travel alone to find your calm.

The luxury of time and simple pleasures

Reading a book in a hammock and making coffee outside

Glamping allows you the time to experience life's simplest pleasures in the most beautiful settings. How often do we get to light a fire pit and cook a delicious breakfast outside with birdsong as your soundtrack, and have the space to perfect your morning coffee as the smell of rich aromas fills the air and sunlight dances on the worktops? There’s no rush and nowhere else you need to be. An afternoon spent doing absolutely nothing but swaying in a hammock and reading may be exactly what you need to create your inner peace, or perhaps a gentle stroll through woodland with your four-legged friend is where you will find your happiness.

Tune into what it is you really wish to do during your getaway, rather than finding inspiration from people you don’t know on social media. The fear of missing out is so prevalent in today's society, but sometimes the greatest thing you can do is step away from the crowds and simply live authentically without the approval of others.

Take inspiration from nature

Fall into the gentle rhythm of nature. As the sun dips beyond the horizon, notice that the day is drawing to a close; nature is simply switching off, and so can you. Have an early night or curl up under a blanket and watch as stars begin to pepper the sky. You could even run yourself an alfresco bath and admire how the moon reflects on the ocean below. There's no need to set an alarm; allow the dawn chorus to gently wake you, and if that feels too early, close your eyes and drift back into a sweet slumber; allow yourself to rest. Notice the weather: is it sunny, beckoning you to step outside and soak up the sweet rays, or is the rain pitter-pattering on your cosy cabin, encouraging you to stay indoors and play a simple game of cards beside the stove? We can learn so much from nature, and when we take time to mirror the way we live with the rhythms of the natural world, we can become more in tune with the environment around us.
