Overview
Step Inside
From the moment you arrive at the secluded Captain Blake’s Retreat, you’ll feel yourself relax from head to toe. The spacious interior’s crisp white walls are complemented with timber floorboards, nautical details and natural soft furnishings, creating a warm and calming atmosphere.
The roomy open-plan living and dining area welcomes you in, with a comfy sofa, leather club chair and vintage coffee table gathered around a toasty wood burner (logs will be provided in the cooler seasons). The floor-to-ceiling windows offer breathtaking ocean views, plus there’s a telescope to look out for wildlife and passing boats. That’s sure to keep you entertained for hours - though when the sun goes down, there’s a wall-mounted TV for cosy movie nights snuggled together under a blanket. Plus there’s a small table and chairs for two, for when the weather doesn’t allow for dining outdoors.
The large kitchen is equipped with everything you’ll need to prepare a home-cooked meal or packed lunch for your day’s adventures, including an electric cooker, microwave, fridge-freezer and dishwasher. You’ll have ample countertop and cupboard space, with navy blue doors that add to the cabin’s luxe-nautical feel.
The bedroom is equally spacious and inviting, with a sumptuous king-sized bed and soft beachy linens, positioned perfectly to look out over the big blue bay below. What better way to start your day than with a morning coffee tucked up in bed and a fresh sea breeze through the open window?
The en-suite shower room has a huge walk-in shower to savour a luxurious soak, as well as a stone wash basin and heated towel rail.
Outdoors
Captain Blake’s Retreat’s outdoor space is spectacular. A large gravel area surrounds the cabin, with a picnic bench overlooking the jaw-dropping views of the golden beach, vast ocean and rugged headland of Rame Head. It’s a glorious spot to sit in the sunshine reading a book, tuck into a freshly prepared feast, look for marine life and sea birds, or simply sit and watch the waves rolling into the shore below. After dark, pour yourself a glass of wine and watch the stars coming out, twinkling over the horizon.
There’s also an outdoor shower to the side of the cabin, perfect for washing away the salt and sand after a day at the beach. It’s the ideal place to rinse off your dog too, who’s most welcome to join you during your stay.
Explore
Captain Blake’s Retreat is set near Whitsand Bay, a peaceful part of Cornwall that tends to be much quieter than many of its more frequently visited spots. Just outside you’ve got immediate access to the glorious South West Coast Path, so a coastal walk along Whitsand Bay is a must. The bay stretches for over three miles from Rame Head to Portwrinkle, with breathtaking views the whole way. Or if you fancy a longer hike, you can go west to Downderry, or east to Maker Heights, where you can stop for an excellent lunch at The Canteen.
You’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to beaches - though if you want to stay local, there’s a track that leads down to the golden beach right below your cabin. It’s a spot that remains peaceful even in the height of summer, so you might even have the beach to yourself. Bliss. Enjoy long days bathing in the sun, taking saltwater dips, snorkelling above the reef, or looking for wildlife in the many rock pools along the shoreline. Or if you’re looking for a more energetic adventure, during the summer you can hire equipment for surfing, body boarding and kayaking at the nearby Eddystone Beach Café.
Within a short distance, there’s plenty more to discover too. Take the eight-minute ferry across the Tamar from Cremyll to Plymouth, where you can have a leisurely lunch at the historic Barbican (we recommend The Bottling Plant if you’re a fan of gin) or marvel at the sealife in the National Marine Aquarium. Head to the charming villages of Kingsand and Cawsand to wander the picturesque streets and enjoy a drink in a beachfront pub. Or take a gentle stroll in the magnificent gardens of Mount Edgcumbe House & Country Park.
