Step Inside

You are sure to fall head over heels in love with the huts' gorgeous interiors and lovely finishing touches. The king-size bed is snuggled to the left of the hideaway, adorned with soft linens for a cosy night's sleep. The thoughtful design of the hut utilities the space perfectly. Younger guests will love the bunk beds, the top bunk folds up to create extra living space during the day. The superbly equipped kitchen has everything you’ll need to rustle up a delicious meal including; a fridge, Belfast sink and a mini gas oven with double hob. This hideaway is the perfect all year round getaway, with its stunning wood burner keeping you cosy no matter the weather. The beautifully presented shower-room is situated to the right of the hideaway, perfect for freshening up after a day of exploring the lovely local area.

Outdoors

The outside space is a dream come true. We love that the garden is enclosed so four legged friends can run around safely. The built-in firepit seating area is the most idyllic spot to soak up the sunshine on a glorious day with a G&T in hand. Or, get snug and toast marshmallows under the stars, as you exchange campfire stories with your loved ones… magical! Relax and unwind in the luxurious wood-fired hot tub before cooking up some delicious Italian delights in the wonderful DeliVita pizza oven… Best enjoyed alfresco! At the bottom of the meadow is a gate leading to a stream that joins a wildlife lake. Immerse yourself in Otter’s Holt natural surroundings and see what wildlife you can spot. Dairy cattle graze in nearby fields and herons, deer, badgers, otters and beavers are known to have made a secret home by the river bank. The quiet beauty of this unique haven will definitely capture your heart.

Eco-features

Otter’s Holt is off-grid and powered by solar, there is no mains electricity, which makes it the perfect hideaway for an undisturbed retreat back to nature. However, there is enough power for the lights and to charge a phone. The owner has kindly provided an in-car hair dryer for guests’ use.

The owners of this hideaway have recently planted new trees on site.

Explore

We really wouldn’t blame you for wanting to spend your days soaking up all the beauty this hideaway has to offer. You may wish to wander through the surrounding fields to find the idyllic lake, enclosed play area and picnic table. From here, you can pick up the ancient riverside path to the historic Ottery St Mary, birthplace of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Alternatively, head in the opposite direction to the traditional village of Tipton St John and enjoy a refreshing local ale at the Golden Lion. If you fancy heading further afield, visit the historic Iron Age fort of Woodbury Castle or take a trip to the bustling city of Exeter. For beach days, head to Sandy Bay or Budleigh Salterton and soak up the sunshine. Such a fabulous last minute get away. Cosy, clean and very dog friendly. Huge comfy bed and very spacious, I feel the photos don’t do it justice. A great little find for a peaceful few days a way to switch of.

We had an absolutely wonderful stay and genuinely enjoyed everything about this place! The private garden was beautifully maintained and felt completely safe for our dog to roam freely. It felt peaceful and secluded, with no close neighbours—so plenty of privacy and quiet.

The outdoor setup was a dream: the seating was super comfortable, and the fire-pit area was simply amazing—perfect for relaxing under the stars. The hut itself was spotless, stylishly decorated, and thoughtfully designed with plenty of storage space.

A big highlight was the warm and helpful host. She went above and beyond by decorating the hut with birthday balloons for my partner’s birthday trip—such a thoughtful surprise! She even offered to pick up items from a local farm shop and bake a birthday cake. That level of care and attention is truly rare.

Another great feature is the layout of the hut and the range—ideal if you want to holiday with another family while still enjoying full privacy. There’s also direct access to a kids’ playground, a tree swing, and even a pond where we spotted a beaver ??—all private and for your use only!

The firepit has a BBQ attachment, so you can really settle in—cook breakfast, enjoy the sunshine, go on a country walk, then wind down with marshmallows or sausages by the fire, listening to the sounds of nature. At night, once the birds settle in, it’s beautifully silent.

The local area is lovely too. Coldharbour shop and restaurant is a must—great for a sunset dinner or winter lunch with live music, and you can even bring a blanket or chairs for a perfect alfresco meal. Essentials are all close by—Sainsbury’s is a 5-minute drive, with a One Stop and hardware store just 3 minutes away. Plus, if you don’t feel like cooking, you can easily order pizza, Chinese, or Indian takeaway locally.

We highly recommend this spot for anyone looking for a peaceful, well-equipped countryside retreat with top-notch hosting. We’d come back in a heartbeat!

Thank you Vicki for brilliant 5 days - we can’t wait to be back - sooooonnnnn!!!!!!!

We had a wonderful 3 night stay at this lovely hut, it was exactly what we were looking for - cosy, peaceful, and set in beautiful surroundings. The hut was spotlessly clean, well-equipped, and had everything we needed for a relaxing break. The host was incredibly friendly and helpful, sharing great recommendations for local walks, places to eat, and nearby attractions. The location is ideal, with a charming town close by and easy access to other destinations. We particularly recommend a visit to Sidmouth and the Donkey Sanctuary, both well worth the trip!

We booked last minute and really appreciated the effort both the host and Classic Cottages made to accommodate us. We’d absolutely love to come back and stay again!

Everything was just perfect, from booking to arrival information to the accommodation itself. We had a beautiful week in the shepherds hut. The location was perfect, it was so peaceful and had everything we needed to relax. My teenagers loved using the fire pit and toasting their marshmallows as well as heating up the hot tub for me. It was lovely to see them enjoy the outdoors while I relaxed in the sun. Would definitely recommend.

We stayed for valentines weekend and our stay was exactly what we were hoping for and more. The shepherds hut was cosy, clean, well furnished and you can tell that a lot of love and care has been put into it by the owners into making it a perfect spot for relaxing. The location was quiet and surrounded by greenery which made it the perfect place to unwind and the private, wood fired hot tub was a real bonus too. Our host was friendly, helpful and quick to respond to any of our queries and questions. We would highly recommend to anyone looking for a little escape <3

Beautiful little hut in a very peaceful small site. The hut was surprisingly large inside and had everything we needed. The beds were really comfortable, I actually slept in the bottom bunk as I was with my two kids and one of them is much bigger than me. Despite this I slept so well as the area was so quiet and peaceful.
The fire pit was great to sit round at night and watch the cows.

We have just had the best weekend staying here. The views were absolutely stunning and the shepherds hut was gorgeous and had everything we needed.
The kids loved every second. It's in a great location too with everything you need just a short drive away.
The owners were so helpful and accommodating too.
We will definitely be coming back and would recommend this to anyone looking for a relaxing trip away.

We stayed here for 3 nights, haven driven up from London, and i could not recommend this highly enough. The property, the farm and surroundings were amazing. The Shepherds Hut was extremely cozy, and easily accommodated me, my wife and 2 teenage children. Amazing location with a hot tub you have to heat with fire wood, which is an amazingly, organic feeling having to do it this way. When we arrived, the key is in the door waiting and the owner arrives within 20 minutes to welcome you. It's a 2 minute drive into the main town, which has everything from Superstore, to restaurants and pubs, and there are several beaches with amazing coastal walks, just a 20 minute drive away. highly recommended and will definitely go back

February 2024

Hosts were amazing and helpful. Lots of storage was really surprised and the overall feel of the place was really lovely. Would definitely come again but maybe in summer when nice and dry.

It's hard work heating the log burner for the hot tub but was a nice experience. But personal preference would favour the ease of an electric jacuzzi. Also struggled with no easy heating such as radiator and lots of kids in terms of trying to dry out clothes on very wet days.

Reply from Unique Hideaways:

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed the feel of the property and found the owners so helpful. We are sorry to hear that you found log burner to be a little challenging, but hope you enjoyed the off-grid experience nonetheless. Hopefully we can welcome you back to Otter's Holt when the sun is shining!

We really enjoyed our stay at Otters Holt Shepherd's Hut. The hut was beautifully decorated, including details with Christmas decorations and lights, which made it very special. The beds were very comfortable and the hut was more spacious than I'd expected and the perfect size for our family of 2 adults and 2 children with a good sized shower and well-equipped kitchenette. The log burner warmed up the space very quickly and made a very cosy atmosphere. Vicki and Dave were excellent hosts. The hot tub was a lovely addition and was worth the wait whilst it heated up! The area is beautiful - peaceful and secluded, yet close to Ottery st Mary and some lovely walks. We had a delicious meal at the Golden Lion in Tipton-st-John and enjoyed our stay very much.

Otter's Holt was a perfect setting for a weekend away with my boyfriend, we loved every second of being there and wished for it not to end! Vicki and Dave were very helpful and lovely hosts. The Hut was beautifully decorated and everything was thought of to cater for our basic needs. Only thing that would have been useful was a plug socket or adapter for my hairdryer :) the hot tub was a big bonus along with the beautiful country surroundings in which to explore and relax in. A really lovely and relaxed weekend in all!

Reply from Unique Hideaways:

We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your break in the shepherd's hut - it's great to be able to truly relax. The electricity is run from a solar panel system so quite happily powers the lights (the mini oven, hob and fridge are run on gas) but something like a hairdryer would be a little to much for the circuits so we ask guests to embrace the glamping lifestyle and go for the natural look during their stay! We loved our stay! The hut was gorgeous and the perfect base for us and our little girl. It was well thought out and had relaxing, calming decor which perfectly complemented the idyllic countryside setting. The hot tub was a wonderful bonus as it enabled us to enjoy the surrounding views even though the weather wasn't as warm as we had hoped, but even so the weather didn't totally spoil our stay as the Hut was surprisingly warm and this made for a cosy feel! It shows that a Shepherd's Hut holiday need not depend on weather, despite being in the middle of a field! In fact, the location felt secluded and yet easily accessible from the road so it was perfect!

I'd like to have been able to plug my hairdryer in and the addition of a toaster or microwave for greater ease might have been handy but these are just minor points and didn't impact upon our enjoyment of our Shepherd's Hut experience!

We loved the Honesty Shop too - fab idea!

Have already recommended to friends! Classic Cottages made booking very easy and we felt confident with the process. It was good to receive a little printed pack in the post, for added reassurance.

Thumbs up for a very positive experience all round
